Check Point Research discovers a critical vulnerability in Canon cameras.

The team of researchers from Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), a leading global cybersecurity provider, has discovered a critical vulnerability in Canon cameras. The company notes that due to its connectivity through USB ports or Wifi connections with other devices such as laptops or smartphones, modern cameras are vulnerable to malware and ransomware attacks.

In this sense, Check Point researchers have studied the potential vulnerabilities of the protocol that allow to infect a camera with a virus. To do this, those responsible for the investigation used the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, which has both USB and WiFi connection, and discovered critical vulnerabilities in the PTP. Since the protocol is standardized and integrated into other brands of cameras, from the company they point out that similar vulnerabilities can also be found in other manufacturers' cameras. It has already informed Canon about these vulnerabilities and both companies have cooperated to address them. Canon, meanwhile, has already published the patch as part of an official safety notice in English and Japanese.

Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), a leading global cybersecurity provider, notes that, due to its connectivity through USB ports or Wi-Fi connections with other devices such as laptops or smartphones, modern cameras are vulnerable to malware and ransomware attacks.

Due to the digitalization of the cameras, which stopped using movies to capture and reproduce images, the International Image Industry Association devised a standardized protocol known as Image Transfer Protocol (PTP) to transfer digital images from the camera to the computer. Initially focused on image transfer, this protocol has evolved to include dozens of different commands that allow you to perform countless actions, from taking a live image to updating the camera's firmware.

"Any" smart "device, including the DSLR camera, is susceptible to attacks," says Eyal Itkin, a researcher at Check Point Software Technologies. “The cameras are not only connected to the USB, but also to the WiFi network and its environment. This makes them more vulnerable to threats, as attackers can inject rescue software into both the camera and the PC to which it is connected. In this way, a cybercriminal could access the photos of a person and kidnap them until the user pays the ransom to be released, ”he concludes.

Aware of the need to guarantee the security of the information stored on any device that surrounds us, from Check Point they indicate the keys to avoid becoming the new victim of this type of attacks:

  1. Make sure the camera is using the latest firmware version, and install the latest available security patches.
  2. Turn off camera wifi connectivity when it is not being used
  3. When connected to the Wifi, preferably use the camera as a network access point, as well as avoid using public connection points.

Check Point Research has already reported these vulnerabilities to Canon and both companies have cooperated to address them. Canon published the patch as part of an official safety notice in English and Japanese.
