Not everyone can afford (or want) to spend more than 100 euros on their smartphone. For some, this type of smartphone may be a good option for your child's first smartphone or a recovery device. But how much is this type of device really worth on a day-to-day basis? We tested the new Alcatel 1X, the basic smartphone with 18: 9 screen and Android Go. This is our final verdict.

Alcatel 1X – Availability and price
Announced at the 2019 MWC, the Alcatel 1X has been available since May in black and blue, for a price of 119 euros. In Amazon, you can already find the device for about 100 euros.
A good design / price ratio
At this price, it is difficult to offer a device with a truly original design. However, the Alcatel 1X (2019) has raised the beautiful challenge of offering a smartphone in 18: 9 format with a remarkable quality of finish. Its compact size and its touch on the back guarantee a good grip.
Minimalist details such as lens rings, refined 2.5D glass and fine design give the smartphone a certain elegance. Of course, we didn't find metal or glass on the back, but at no time does the phone make a great low-cost impression. We even found 4G and facial recognition (without fingerprint reader) with Face Key functionality that uses the front camera to detect 106 key points and create a 3D representation.
A pretty disappointing screen
If the design is a good surprise, the screen is a small disappointment>. The 5.5: 18: 9 aspect ratio of the screen is practical, but the LCD panel shows its limitations. The maximum brightness is quite low, so that in conditions of intense exterior lighting readability is complicated. The HD + definition of 720 x 1440 pixels is however correct and marks a significant improvement compared to last year's model. The contrasts are generally good, unlike the viewing angles.
With Android Go
Alcatel had the good idea of putting Android Go (under Android Oreo) on its Alcatel 1X (2019). For those who do not know, this is a reduced version of Android that is optimized for smartphones low consumption (with low internal memory and RAM and a low performance processor).
The interface has been modified a bit by Alcatel and you should also know that the manufacturer has also added some pre-installed applications but they are quite useful (file manager, radio, voice recorder …). However, the possibility of receiving Android Pie is uncertain, since Alcatel has not communicated anything about it.
As a result, the experience offered on the smartphone is quite good with a remarkable fluidity for this type of terminal. It is true that it is necessary to be more patient when opening applications and not abusing multitasking, but in general the smartphone responds correctly to requests. Once again, it would have been impossible a few years ago to offer such an experience at this price.
Do not expect maximum speed
Under the hood there is a Mediatek MT6739ww processor (Quad core A53, 1.5 GHz) and 2GB of RAM, so don't expect high performance. Slowdowns are common in the Alcatel 1X, although they certainly won't bother all users, but it's more obvious to me because I'm used to trying many smartphones high end I could not perform some benchmarking tests due to the lack of power of the device that could not perform the tasks.
However, the smartphone is sufficient for basic use (WhatsApp, navigation, YouTube…) If you want a smartphone for video games, think about other options because 1X (2019) will not allow you to enjoy a good gaming experience. In case of intensive use, the smartphone has a tendency to fail.
In addition to the 16 GB of memory, Alcatel offers a microSD card slot. This way, you won't have to worry about storing all your photos. Highly recommend buying a memory card or you can quickly run out of capacity

Alcatel 1X – Camera
Alcatel offers in its 1X a dual camera of 13 MP + 2 MP, with apertures of f / 2.0 and f / 2.4. To be honest, the quality is average in this device, especially compared to devices sold for about fifty euros more expensive (which is 50% of the price of 1X).
The approach may be precise, but it is far from fast. However, the details are quite visible and the color reproduction is accurate. In low light, it is a bit more complicated. Alcatel also offers endless options to enrich the experience: continuous shooting, bokeh effect, micro video, night mode, panorama, filters for photos and videos in real time, refocusing, social mode, instant, time lapse, video stabilization (EIS) ….
As far as video quality is concerned, it is possible to shoot in Full-HD 1080p but the result is far from being good.

A very satisfactory autonomy
From a technical point of view, it should be noted that the terminal has a non-removable 3000 mAh battery. A very good number in theory, since you have to keep in mind that the phone offers an HD + screen that doesn't consume much energy. In practice, the smartphone can easily last all day even in conditions of intensive use (calls, WhatsApp, Internet, YouTube….)
This is quite positive, especially since this type of smartphone is quite disappointing in theory. Of course, it does not have fast charging, wireless charging or a USB Type-C plug.

|1440 x 720 pixels (293 ppi)|

|HSPA, LTE, Dual-SIM, Bluetooth 4.2|
It is difficult to get excited about a terminal that sells for about 100 euros. However, Alcatel 1X (2019) offers an interesting value for money. With its modern design, its light version of Android and its good autonomy, this device can be a good choice for a first smartphone or a temporary option for a few months. However, its limitations are numerous and the most demanding users can opt for a smartphones Xiaomi or Honor, which are undoubtedly more expensive, but much more complete.
