Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B: one of the best full-sized balanced headphones

In today's review, I want to talk about the updated version of mega-popular closed-type headphones Audio Technica ATH-MSR7, we will talk about the new version of Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B. Apparently the Latin letter “B” means that these are balanced headphones with reconfigured drivers.

Packaging and delivery

Headphones are delivered in a rather soft cardboard box made in bright colors. On the front surface there is an image of the device, the name of the manufacturer and model.

On the back of the box is a brief technical information and information about the manufacturer.

Inside this box is a second box made of fairly dense, black cardboard.

Opening the hinged lid, we immediately see a neoprene shipping case with a separate pocket for transporting and storing the cable.

Below, in a plastic tray covered with soft cloth, are the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B headphones.

The delivery set is pretty good, it includes:

  • Headphones Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B;
  • Neoprene shipping case
  • Cable with 3.5 mm plug TRS;
  • Cable with 4.4 mm TRRRS plug;
  • Brief instruction.

Design

Before dwelling on the design features, I want to say that Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B is pleased with the quality of performance, the combination of metal and plastic, in the manufacture of the headphone case, while the headphones have a restrained, classic design. The design itself causes a feeling of reliability and quality factor, and elements that are more susceptible to wear, such as ear pads and cable, can easily be replaced.

The headphone cups are rotated along two axes, while it is possible to put them “flat”, which is convenient for transportation or storage. The material used to make the cups is an alloy of aluminum and magnesium, in theory a similar technological solution is designed to reduce vibration at medium and low frequencies.

To control the air flow in the headphone case, Triple-venting Acoustic Airflow technology was used – this is a fairly new ventilation system, which implies the presence of three air ducts, which allows you to control air flow. Such a solution brings the sound of closed headphones closer to the sound level of headphones with an open acoustic design. This technology involves the use of a low-frequency panel of acoustic resistance and a high-frequency resistor grid made of stainless steel with triple ventilation. Also in the cup body are forty-five-millimeter True Motion drivers with diaphragms coated with diamond-like carbon, capable of creating high-resolution sound.

Using this technology allowed Audio Technica engineers to get a very wide soundstage.

At the bottom of the cups are connectors for branded Audio-Technica A2DC plugs.

Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B ear pads are large and deep, made of high-quality soft eco leather, inside they are filled with anatomical latex (material with a memory effect), thanks to which, a few minutes after using the ear pads take the form of adjacent surfaces. The large size allows the headphones to sit perfectly on almost any ears.

On the inside, on the cup holder, is the marking of the channels.

Here are sliding arms, allowing you to change the size of the head circumference for headphones.

The name of the model is marked on the outside.

The headband is combined, it has plastic, metal (aluminum frame) and eco-leather, similar to the one from which the ear pads are made. The clamping force of the headband is strong enough, therefore, the owners of a large head may need to slightly flatten the metal plates, although this must be done very carefully so as not to break the frame. Such a strong pressing force is justified by the fact that the headphones have amazing sound insulation.

As mentioned earlier, two Y-shaped cables equipped with proprietary Audio-Technica A2DC connectors come with headphones. The difference between the cables is that one of them is equipped with a standard 3.5 mm three-pin plug, and the second is 4.4 mm with a five-pin balanced plug, making it possible for the user to use Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B headphones in a bundle of top-end audio players equipped with balanced outputs.

The transport case allows you to store headphones in it, and in a separate pocket cords and even an audio player.

Sound

Before you start talking about the sound of the headphones, I want to say about the level of sound insulation, and it is at a very decent level in the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B headphones. Due to the rather strong squeezing of the headband, the ear cushions tightly fit the auricles, while providing an excellent level of sound insulation, which may be lacking except in the subway. At the same time, not only you are protected from excess noise, but also the people around you are protected from listening to your compositions. Perhaps a greater level of comfort can offer only headphones with active noise reduction.

Despite the fact that the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B headphones have very worthy characteristics, the manufacturer somehow hints that the main scope of this model is related to wearable gadgets (we are talking about complete cables 1.2 meters long). In this connection, testing the sound quality of the headphones was carried out on a mobile phone and several audio players:

Samsung Galaxy Note9

Hidizs AP 60 II

Hidizs ap80

It is worth remembering that any headphones require warming up to get the best sound level, moreover, in order to assess their quality, you need to carefully approach the choice of sound recordings, of course it is best to listen to uncompressed compositions.

Listening to music in relatively good quality (mp3 320kbps) on your mobile phone and audio players gives you an idea that the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B is not just closed mid-range headphones from the top shelf of the store, it's something more. Even the compressed soundtracks sounded a clear, bright sound.

Listening to songs recorded in flac format presented much more interesting results. The sound, which was already excellent, began to feel like analytic, with excellent resolution and a very low level of distortion. Headphones produced an honest and unadorned sound without any distortion.

Low frequencies feel fast and deep, the bass works perfectly with any genre, the headphones do not matter whether it is rock, pop or electronic music. In terms of bass speed, headphones can well compete with more expensive models.

Mid frequencies sound spacious and separate, in fact they are restrained and neutral, which allows the headphones to perfectly work out vocals. The low distortion level allowed Audio Technica engineers to achieve a very clean and accurate presentation, making the imaginary scene pleasing to users with its width and depth.

High frequencies are very bright, without too much whip, which will please fans of classical music.

A sensitivity of 101 dB gives sufficient volume, and an impedance of 35 ohms allows the headphones to work perfectly not only with Hi-Res players, but also with smartphones and tablets.

The main task of a balanced cable is to more accurately display all the nuances of music, while it is necessary to use exclusively uncompressed audio files, however, unfortunately, I do not have to test the operation of Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B headphones in this mode.

Advantages

  • Great, audiophile sound;
  • Triple-venting Acoustic Airflow Technology;
  • The feeling of comfort during operation;
  • Excellent sound insulation quality (for headphones without noise reduction system);
  • Build quality and quality of materials used;
  • Contents of delivery.

disadvantages

  • Despite the fact that the bass is clean and deep, its amount is somewhat small.

Conclusion

Headphones Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B is rightfully one of the most popular mid-range headphone models. The model perfectly conveys the space, offers a wide stage and a detailed picture of music. Foam ear pads and headband with memory effect, ultra-lightweight design and optimal bowl pressure level allow owners of this model to enjoy their favorite compositions for many hours. Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B – a worthy solution in its price range for users who want to hear audiophile sound.
