If you are traveling in the United States with a MacBook Pro In baggage, please note: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has forbidden the boarding of certain units of this line on domestic flights. The reason? Fire risk.
The sense of déjà vu is no mere coincidence. The measure recalls the restrictions that made the Galaxy Note 7 be prohibited on flights from various parts of the world. The main difference with the MacBook Pro is that the ban here ceases to exist if the device has been recalled.
For those out of the question, in June, the Apple started a global recall program valid for 15-inch Retina display MacBooks Pro that shipped between September 2015 and February 2017. According to the company, the battery in these units may overheat and cause a fire.
Hence the FAA ban. THE Bloomberg, the agency explained that it is aware of the MacBook Pro battery problem and has warned airlines about the recall program.
Along with the warning, the entity reminded companies of a regulation in place since 2016 that prohibits the transportation of equipment that is subject to a safety recall on aircraft, unless the defective component has already been repaired or replaced.
With the ban, affected units cannot be transported even in the cargo compartment of aircraft. It is not clear how surveillance will be carried out at airports to avoid misunderstandings; after all, it is necessary to check the equipment's serial number to find out whether or not it is eligible for recall.
Some carriers in Europe are also already restricting shipments with problematic MacBooks Pro. The TUI Group, for example, is already directing airport officials and flight attendants to make announcements about it.
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates, 432,000 MacBook Pro units are at risk of battery incidents. NoteHowever, this number refers only to units sold in the United States.
