Movies, games, photographs, music … The space available on our PC or Mac ends up running out before the huge amount of files we store, some consciously and others without realizing it. It's so easy to download content today that at any time we will run out of disk space.
Microsoft and Apple they know it, hence with each new version of Windows and macOS we find new and different ways to address the problem of lack of space on our computer
It is clear that the simplest solution is to obtain more space. On the one hand, it is possible to acquire a external disk, increasingly affordable, smaller and with greater capacity. There are even with Wi-Fi so you don't have to connect them directly. Another quick and easy solution is to go to OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox or iCloud to upload files and thus lighten the disk of our PC or Mac.
But in this article we will opt for the basics and without having to go through the box, since many times a simple cleaning and deletion of files It will give us more space available without having to buy a new device.
Search the culprit
First step, find the cause or causes that we have little disk space. In Windows 10 we will see this from Settings> Change PC settings> PC and devices> Disk space.
You can also go to the Paper bin and see if you have files there that take up a lot of size. Third place where we have to look, the Store Windows, which will tell us the size of the installed apps by clicking on See sizes of my applications.
To see how we occupy the space in macOS we must go to the menu of Apple > About this Mac> Storage. And to know more, we will click on Manage…. You should also take a look at the Trash and the Downloads folder.
In Windows, we can go to the Assistant that will help us to delete heavy files from two sites. The fastest is from the Start menu, looking for “space”. So we will find the tool Free up space which will allow us to delete files from the system that occupies space and that we can delete now.
In macOS we also have a Wizard to delete files. As we saw before, from Apple > About this Mac> Storage> Manage … We will see the type of content we have on disk and how much it occupies. In addition, it offers several solutions, such as emptying the Trash automatically every 30 days, deleting the iTunes content (videos, music …) that we have already seen (and that will continue in the cloud) or uploading our files to iCloud, among other options.
Stopping to see what apps and games we have installed is a quick way to gain disk space. Do we really use all those applications? And what about the games? In the case of Windows 10, on the one hand we must look at the apps of Store Windows and on the other the normal apps available in Home> Control panel> Programs> Programs and features.
To find the heaviest files and find ISO images, movies and other large content that we may have forgotten and do not need, Windows 10 makes our search easier. First we open This team, Then in Search this team We write "size: huge", without the quotes. On the menu Watch We will have the possibility to sort the results by size and thus eliminate those we do not want.
Without leaving Apple > About this Mac> Storage> Manage …, in the content list we will see the space occupied by each one. Entering each type of content, we will have the opportunity to see applications or files that more "weigh" and decide if it is worth keeping them or we can eliminate them.
