How to put your iPhone / iPad in DFU mode for recovery

by Kelvin

Whenever you are Apple mobile devices stop working and you cannot restore them using recovery mode, an alternative method is to put them in DFU mode. DFU mode, which stands for firmware device update mode, is a mode created by Apple which basically freezes your iOS device. It will not allow iOS to boot the device (bypassing the iBoot mechanism), but the device will still be able to communicate with iTunes on a PC / Mac and can therefore be recovered. Then you can choose to update, downgrade or restore the iOS software.

Putting your iOS device in DFU mode requires a different key combination on each of the new major devices Apple launch (due to the fact Apple removed the Start button on most device variations.) However, all methods still use the Power button (the On / Off button located on the right side of the device or on top of the device in an earlier version). The difference later Apple the model uses the volume down button instead of the home button to enter DFU mode.

Note: When DFU restores your iPhone, your computer deletes and reloads every bit of code that controls your iPhone's software and hardware. Thus, all data on your device will be erased. Be sure to use this method as a last resort to repair a device that is not working.

iPhone XR, XS, XS Max

1. Connect iPhone XR, XS or XS Max to your PC / Mac and make sure iTunes is running on your computer.

2. Turn off your iPhone. Stay connected to your PC / Mac.

3. Press and release the Volume Up button quickly.

4. Press and release the button to decrease the volume quickly.

5. Now press and hold the side button until the Power off slider appears. Release the button and drag the slider to turn off your iPhone.

6. Press and hold the power button on the side of your iPhone. After three seconds, while holding down the power button, press and hold the button to decrease the volume ten seconds.

7. Release the Power button only while continuing to press the volume button for another five seconds.

8. If the screen is still black, your device is now in DFU mode. iTunes should automatically appear with a notification similar to the previous one.

Note: If after a step 6 you see Apple Logo or "Plug to iTunes" screen after step 7, that means you pressed the button for too long. Try this method again, because time is sometimes quite complicated.
