What is Google Stadia Tandem Mode?
Tandem mode is a new feature that the company has already announced will be available on Google Stadia, but it arrived almost a year after the service launched.
This experimental feature is to allow the user of the service to be able to connect other game controllers available on the market with Google Stadia. For example, to be able to use two of the most popular and valuable controllers among gamers around the world: Xbox and PS4. But wait, couldn’t those controllers be used with Stadia already?
Yes and no, until now you could use Xbox and PS4 controllers with Google Stadia if you ran the service on a mobile device or computer. However, if you accessed the TV via the Premiere Edition package consisting of Google Chromecast Ultra and an official controller, the other controllers could not be connected.
This is now complete and they will allow you to use other controls, what you will see later makes a lot of sense and may be before and after for some Google Stadia users. Of course, this does not mean that the principle of operation is a little strange, although understandable. Because the official Stadia controller will act as a bridge between the new gamepad and the service.
How to use Stadia tandem mode
To use Google Stadia’s tandem mode, all you need to do is have a compatible remote connected to the TV or screen you want to use it on via Chromecast Ultra, unless officially supported. Once this is done, steps to follow are as follows:
- Turn on the main Google Stadia controller
- Make sure it is correctly anchored to the screen
- Now make sure the add-on controller you want to use is charged and turned off.
- Connect the new controller to the Stadia controller using a USB cable.
The only thing you have to keep in mind is that if you are using a USB A to USB C adapter, it must be on the side of the Stadia controller. Again, remember that the secondary controller must be turned off before connecting it to the primary controller you are using the Stadia with.
Stadia tandem compatible controllers
As far as compatible controllers are concerned, no one with a Bluetooth connection already compatible with the respective Xbox or PS4 is valid. List of those supported by Stadia tandem mode:
|Stadia controller||18d1: 9400|
|Adaptive Xbox Controller||045e: 0b0a|
|Xbox One Controller||045e: 02d1|
|Xbox One Elite Controller (Series 1 & 2)||045e: 02e3|
|Sony DualShock 4 Controller||054c: 05c4|
Usefulness of tandem mode
At this point, knowing that if you are running Google Stadia on a computer or mobile device, you may already be using other controls that are not official, what is this tandem mode for? … Well, basically, its main purpose is improve accessibility parameters service.
This means that you can use other controllers that allow you to play differently than usual, or with an accessory that is only compatible with that controller. The most prominent example here is the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Although Stadia’s tandem mode also allows two controllers to be used at the same time, so another user can help you, or you can do it to anyone playing.
These are, as we speak, options that improve the gameplay and accessibility that is so important to many players. So while it doesn’t look like you, the new tandem mode is an important and interesting service improvement.
