When you start using a new Mac and set up the Mail app, you'll soon find out that you can do some really cool things. You can create rules to handle email automatically and configure smart mailboxes to archive messages quickly.
But before learning the advanced features of the Mail app, it's important to know the basics. And when it comes to the basics; Sorting, organizing, and searching for the mail app falls into that category.
So for those of you new to Mac, here is how to sort, organize, and search the Mail app.
Sort emails in the mail app on Mac
You have several quick ways to sort emails in the Mail app and you can change them with one click.
Sort by column
Inside default email layout, You have a message list on the left and the message you selected on the right. You can click the column headings at the top of the message list and choose what you want to sort by the attachments, dates, from, and more options. Just choose one of these options to sort your message list.
If you use classic letter designYour email view has a column at the top with the message you selected below. Click one of the columns to sort it and click again to reverse the order. For example, if you click to sort by From, it will display in alphabetical order starting with A above, and if you click again, it will reverse and start with Z above.

You can also use the actions in the menu bar to sort the design you are using. Click on See > Sort by and select options like size, subject or unread. You can also choose to have the oldest or most recent message or from A to Z above, depending on the type of agreement with your choice.
Manage email in the Mail app on Mac
Keeping your inbox organized can be a difficult job, especially if you receive countless emails every day. But the Mail app gives you a simple way to organize your messages.
Create a mailbox
Mailboxes, which are basically folders, allow you to save and manage messages for all the accounts you've set up.
If the sidebar opens in your mailbox, scroll down to that account's mailbox and click plus sign on the right (this will appear when you mouse over it). Or you can click mailbox > New mailbox from the menu bar.
In the popup, confirm now Location (email account) or choose a different one from the dropdown box, give it to a mailbox nameand click good.
Organize with mailboxes
Now you can use the new Mailbox (folder) to organize your messages and you have several different ways to do it. Select the message, and then do one of the following.
- Drag to the mailbox in the sidebar.
- Click on Message > Moved to from the menu bar and select Mailbox.
- Right click message select Moved to from the context menu and select Mailbox.
- Click the arrow to Move dropdown box in the Mail toolbar and select Mailbox.
Find email in Mail app on Mac
The last Mac beginner email tip we'll discuss is the search feature. This is a valuable tool when you need to find certain messages and you are not sure which mailbox, or even which account, exists.
That Search box by default in the upper right corner of the Mail application window on the toolbar. Start typing what you're looking for, be it the sender, the subject line, or part of the body of the email. You'll immediately see suggestions for things like people, subjects, and mailboxes that you can choose from or continue typing to limit it.
When you find and select the email you are looking for and finish it, just click X inside Search box to delete it and return to your current mailbox.
