HTC 10 Review 17

He made his official arrival in Chile on Wednesday, May 25, just last and we already have it in our hands. I am referring to the new HTC 10 that today will become our main protagonist.

In this review we will know in depth that elegant metallic design that this team has, we will know how that Snapdragon 820 behaves that has as a processor or that main camera of 12 megapixels that say that it is one of the best in the market.

All that and much more we will see and know in this complete analysis that we bring you the new HTC 10.

An elegant metallic design

HTC has accustomed us to elegant designs, with quality materials and comfort in its high-end models, and the HTC 10 is no exception.

Here we find a design that wastes elegance where you look at it thanks to its completely metallic unibody body, in addition to its Carbon Gray color, make our protagonist have a very good presentation.

Despite being a metal equipment, it is not at all heavy as I expected. In fact, if I compare it with the iPhone 6s Plus, the HTC 10 turns out to be lighter, in addition to feeling very comfortable to have it in our hand, thanks to the rounded edges that come from the back of the device and allowing at the same time a better grip

While our HTC 10 has a 5.2-inch screen, the physical size of the device matches those inches very well, since it does not feel a larger or smaller team.

5.2 inch anti fingerprint screen

Yes dear reader! Our prayers were finally heard by a manufacturer! With this equipment I can finally say that your screen is NOT a fingerprint magnet like many others I have tried during these 5 years of reviewer.

Here we have a 5.2-inch screen of the Super LCD5 type and its resolution reaches 2560 × 1440 pixels, which means that we are facing a QHD or 2K screen and has a density of 565 pixels per inch (ppi).

According to what I could see, the image quality delivered by this screen, in my opinion is quite good, very similar to the quality offered by IPS, even has very good definition, just as the brightness level it has is quite high , making colors look vivid.

However, there was a detail that did not let me convince myself at all, but I did not know what it was, until I began to compare with the IPS screen of the iPhone 6s Plus. The image quality between both devices is good, but on HTC 10 the response speed is slower, so in fast images, we will see that “ghost effect” that we had stopped seeing on the screens.

But do not misunderstand me dear reader, the image quality of the screen is good, nobody says otherwise, but when you see fast images or elements that move too fast, you will notice that that element is leaving a trail as it moves and that is It is called “ghost effect”, something that the rest of the screens have worked to eliminate completely.

As for options, we have some available for the screen. Starting first with the famous “gloves mode” which you will find on this HTC 10, we can also control the screen temperature or by choosing Vivid or sRGB profiles.

Finally I leave you a photograph so you can appreciate how this screen looks in broad daylight:

Main camera of 12 and a front of 5 MP

Here we have a main sensor that reaches 12 megapixels of resolution and an aperture f / 1.8, in addition to incorporating optical image stabilization in both the front and rear cameras. It also has a double flash of different hue and laser autofocus.

When we activate the camera of our protagonist, we will find a somewhat basic interface, but if we slide from the left side of the screen, we will find more ways to use the camera.

HTC 10 Review 18

There we will find the normal photo mode, then comes the Zoe Camera that will allow you to record a 2-second video (similar to iPhone's Live Photos), the Panorama mode to capture photos of that type and finally we will find the Pro mode.

HTC 10 Review 19

This mode will allow us to take photographs in JPEG or RAW format, as well as having the possibility to manually adjust the brightness level, white balance, ISO, aperture and focus. We can also change the image format of 4: 3, 1: 1 and 16: 9.

In addition to the above, we will also find modes for the front camera, such as the photo Self-Portrait for the famous selfies, as well as you can activate the makeup to “look better”. You can also record videos with a maximum Full HD quality.

HTC 10 Review 20

The main camera also has the ability to create videos and you can choose if you want to record them in 4K, Full HD, HD, QVGA and MMS formats. Only in the first three you can record the audio of the video in Hi-Res (High Resolution Audio).

In addition to the above, you can also capture videos in slow motion or perform a Hyperlapse.

Test pictures and videos

Then you can see and scroll through photographs that were captured by HTC 10 in automatic mode and in different light conditions.

And here you have a video recorded in 4K so you can appreciate a little how the image and audio quality is in the videos that our protagonist captures.

Audio and Multimedia

Starting with the multimedia theme, our HTC 10 does not incorporate a proprietary audio player as before, here we will only find the famous Google Play Music.

HTC 10 Review 21HTC 10 Review 22

With it we can play all our music stored on the device or MicroSD, including FLAC audio files that are in Hi-Res, in addition to being able to access the Google Play Music catalog (the paid service) or the music that we have stored in said service.

HTC 10 Review 23

Our protagonist does not have a dedicated video player, since it only uses the one that comes by default on Android, which is totally basic, so in these cases I recommend that you download others from Google Play as VLC to take advantage of it.

HTC BoomSound

HTC is one of the few manufacturers that really cares about offering excellent audio quality in its smartphones and our protagonist enjoys that.

I tell you that the HTC 10 includes proprietary headphones and that they are ready to listen to audio in Hi-Res (high resolution audio). I personally tried them with music on Hi-Res and the difference is noticeable, it is as if I had the same artist singing next to me, it sounds very good.

For bass fans, these headphones do not have such a powerful bass, it is rather soft and an excellent definition, it is a privilege to listen to music with this equipment.

HTC 10 Review 24HTC 10 Review 25

HTC also has a setup menu where you can apply Dolby Audio effects depending on the type of headphones you connect. You can also create a custom audio profile according to your hearing thanks to some tests that the team will perform using frequencies.

Finally I tell you that the HTC 10 is the first Android that has exceeded the volume power of the iPhone, demonstrating that this device does not have the limited volume like most Android devices, so I applaud HTC for this .

I had the same experience when connecting stereo Bluetooth headphones, which were very good and it has the Apt-X codec to improve audio quality.

Finally we have the stereo speakers, which left me unfortunately not happy. The sound is indeed stereo, but what HTC does here was to enable the main headset as a speaker, but this is not made for that, so it only delivers sharp audio and less power than the right speaker that is located at the bottom of the team.

We could say that HTC here cheated, in fact it is like using those modifications that are in XDA that several smartphones It allows you to activate the audio of the headset and use it as a second speaker, here it is the same. I insist, the audio is in stereo, but the volume that comes from the headset is much smaller and more acute than the loud and loud sound emitted by the other speaker (the true speaker).

In any case, the audio emitted is quite decent and acceptable, but it does not reach the level of the audio it emitted – to give you an example – the speakers of the HTC One M7 (the last HTC I tried).

In conclusion, we have premium audio through headphones, but there is no more audio through the speakers.

Marshmallow Android operating system

The HTC 10 comes from the factory with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system.

HTC 10 Review 26HTC 10 Review 27

As you will see, the system is modified with the personalization layer of HTC called Sense and no longer turns out to be as invasive as before, in fact it keeps several parts almost unmodified and is very fluid, without slowness at any time.

As for proprietary applications we will only find two calls Boost + and HTC Help. The first will allow you to manage RAM, internal memory, manage applications, block applications, optimize performance … etc. The second will offer you different tools to solve problems you have with the equipment.

Now, as the team here in Chile arrives exclusively with the Claro operator, you will find applications, sounds and wallpapers that are from the operator, even with unwanted bloatware. In any case, there are Themes that you can download for free to customize the equipment.

I invite you to watch the following video so you can see how the device interface is, some proprietary functions and see how fluid the system runs in general. Remember to activate in YouTube quality (email protected)

Screen usage: 4 hours, 49 minutes and 7 seconds.Total hours of use: 14 hours approximately.

The HTC 10 is a very complete team, it has everything you can imagine within the segment and also everything does well. It has a very nice and elegant design, a screen with very good quality, good camera and a very good audio.

The battery may not be the best if you are a very demanding person, but if you will use it normally, the battery will give you an autonomy of approximately one and a half days.

Returning to the theme of the camera, by day it behaves very well offering excellent quality. However, the white balance plays a little against the night photos, as there is something that does not allow the photos to look good at night. However, that can be fixed with a software update.

Anyway, the HTC 10 is a true high-end, with it you do not have to worry about performance because you will not have any problem, it has a good camera, it will be the perfect smartphone for those who love music and a robust but very elegant design.

The HTC 10 is found exclusively with the operator Claro Chile from $ 674,990 if you carry it as prepaid or from $ 435,900 if you hire a 12GB PRO plan of $ 60,000 per month.

We already thank HTC Chile and Claro Chile for the loan of this unit in order to bring you this present review.

  • Very good performance
  • Good quality camera
  • Good screen
  • The MicroSD card reader is appreciated
  • Compatible with all Chilean networks
  • Excellent audio quality
  • Design and good materials
  • It comes with good quality Hi-Res headphones

  • I expected better sound on the stereo speakers
  • The battery is good, but I expected a little longer. Perhaps a better optimization helps with some future software update
  • Too much bloatware by the Claro operator
  • Its price is perhaps a bit high
