The best budget smartphone
HMD Global introduced five different smartphones at the IFA. With the outdoor smartphone Nokia 800 Tough and the Nokia 2720 Flip flip phone were also interesting devices, but these feature phones are more likely to appeal to a small audience. Who needs a full-fledged smartphone, but looks more likely on the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2. And just the slightly faster Nokia 7.2 is for us the budget king of the fair.
Nokia 7.2 in hands-on
Already in the run-up we were able to examine the device in the Zeiss headquarters in Oberkochen under the magnifying glass. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 660 SoC. Certainly not a high-end chipset, but quite fast enough for everyday use. There are 4/6 GB of RAM and 64/128 GB of internal memory. This can be expanded by a microSD card. In addition to this, two SIM cards can also be accommodated in the device. On the back there are three sensors on a round camera base, these offer a resolution of 48, 8 and 5 megapixels. The 20 MP front camera is in a drop of water notch in the 6.3-inch LCD screen. The screen resolves with FHD + and is HDR-10 capable.
Although the Nokia 7.2 is still delivered with Android 9 Pie, however, HMD Global has already promised an update to the latest version Android 10. Already in the past, the company has put emphasis on product maintenance. The device is expected to be released at the end of September and will start at just 300 Euro. There is only one small drawback, which we noticed in the hands-on: The back with the matte glass may be chic, but is also very slippery. A protective cover would therefore be highly recommended for this device.
The most powerful smartphone
Modern mobile games often irritate the power of a smartphone completely, even with many flagship devices. That's why so-called gaming smartphones are becoming increasingly popular. This is not about the most beautiful photos, the lightest device or the slimmest design, but pure performance. That's exactly what the new one brings ROG Phone 2. The device contains the largest Vaporchamber on the market, which should keep the Snapdragon 855+ cool for a while even under full load. For really long gaming sessions, there are also accessories that cool down the processor with active ventilation.
The ROG Phone 2 with Twinview dock in hands-on
The revision of the Twinview Dock has been particularly successful. This now offers the same 120-Hz display as the smartphone itself. This is also evident from the fact that this screen even detects the same recesses for sensors and camera under the glass – here, of course, without the corresponding sensors behind it. In addition, the accessory is compatible with the ROG Kunai gamepad, in which the controller elements can now be attached laterally, similar to the Nintendo Switch, The gamepad can also be easily connected via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct or USB Type C and makes a very good first impression. The keys and sticks are just a bit small, especially for big hands. From September 20, the device is available in Germany, a pre-order is already possible.
The most innovative smartphone
Actually, this category could also (grammatically, of course, incorrect) "The most foldable smartphone", because this year, innovation is all about the subject Foldables. And after months of waiting now became the Samsung Galaxy Fold presented for the second time this year. The announcement at the IFA was at least a small surprise, but most believed that the device will celebrate its comeback only at the end of September. But now the sale starts in Germany a little earlier, namely on 18 September. And this date is exactly one day before the official launch of the Mate 30 series by competitor Huawei, is certainly pure coincidence …

While the first release in April already after a short time problems with the Galaxy Fold should not be the case this time, because Samsung has intensified a lot. Especially the hinge now made a much more stable impression in our hands-on. However, the concept was not completely convincing. Nevertheless, the technology is very interesting and especially for technology enthusiasts, the innovative smartphone is a very nice gimmick. However, the whole thing has its price: 2,100 euros it costs Galaxy Fold, After all, there is the high-end chipset Snapdragon 855 and a 5G modem. In addition, a total of seven camera sensors were installed in the device.
The best compact smartphone
Whether 6.1 inch screen diagonal are really considered compact, that may be controversial. At the Sony Xperia 5 is definitely a handier version of its big brother Xperia 1. Thanks to the unusual 21: 9 form factor, the device is also surprisingly good in the hand, and is even with smaller hands still easy to use. The resolution of the screen was downgraded from 4K to 2,520 x 1,080 pixels, otherwise the same hardware is used in the Xperia 5 as in the Xperia 1. So if you could not make friends with the size of the flagship, you'll get the handier and cheaper option here.

Sony is particularly proud of the built-in cameras. After all, the company is also a pioneer in the field of mirrorless digital cameras. The Xperia 5 uses one wide-angle, one super wide-angle and one telephoto camera. These offer a very good autofocus with eye-tracking, which always focuses very clean even with fast movements. For videos, the Cinema-Pro App is preinstalled, which allows many manual settings such as ISO value, shutter speed and white balance. In addition, videos can now be recorded in 21: 9. The feature will also be available on the larger model Sony Xperia 1 after the launch of the Xperia 5 in October.
