LaCie Mobile Drive Portable Hard Drive Review: Simply Portable 2

LaCie called Mobile Drive is a portable HDD that looks stylish, for those looking for style in the life of their external storage. But that's about all it's worth compared to most other comparable external drives. In tests, this reached speeds of up to 140 MBps, which is not so bad for external users. 2.5-inch HDDs, but they're in the stone age compared to SSD-based alternatives. And while the price is cheaper than the flash, be prepared to pay LaCie taxes for aesthetics. LaCie demands a significant premium, of $ 25-50 per capacity, compared to carrying out the same external HDD option on the market.

The latest generation of LaCie external hard drives focuses on luxury design. And we can't blame the company, given that single-disk-based portable storage units tend to be very similar (and stagnant) in terms of performance, making it difficult to distinguish. This portable external HDD feels as solid as it looks. The diamond cut aluminum layer makes this unit one of the most attractive devices we have used this year. But, that doesn't seem to be the case.

The LaCie mobile unit comes in a large capacity to store all of your data. LaCie claims that its largest capacity can support up to 4 Hours of 4K video or up to 500,000 photos. It uses a new USB-C interface, but since it is still an HDD, it cannot start to clutter the interface.

LaCie Mobile Drive Portable Hard Drive Review 2

  • Slim aesthetics
  • Solid build quality
  • Includes USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cables
  • A good LaCie software package
  • Including one month of Adobe CC

  • Expensive for the capacity and performance you get

LaCie Mobile Drive Features Sleek Design Apple-as a finish. Its price is higher than the alternatives on the market, but outside of aesthetics, it is similar in performance and capacity for cheaper units. So unless you're primarily interested in looks or trying the free months of Adobes Creative Cloud, there are better options available at cheaper prices.

LaCie lists Mobile Drive availability in four capacities: 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 5TB. They all don't have official ratings on the LaCie website, but in tests they can reach speeds of around 140MB / s. Unlike its SSD counterparts, Mobile Drive has a 2 year shorter warranty

Software and accessories

Two USB cables are included in the unit, one USB Type-C to Type-C cable and the other USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable for wide compatibility. This means that the unit will work with Thunderbolt 3- and USB 3 compatible devices.

Out of the box, the LaCie Mobile Drive comes in preFAT format, making it PC and Mac compatible. Preloaded on disk is a warranty document and the app launches quickly to help you set up your Adobe membership and download the LaCie's Toolkit , which can be used to back up your data.

Like the LaCie Rugged RAID Pro we reviewed a few months ago, the LaCie Mobile Drive also comes with 1-month membership for the Adobe Creative Apps All Cloud bundle ($ 53 if purchased separately). Unfortunately, no encryption or software features are included.

Look closely

The LaCie Mobile Drive features a sandblasted aluminum finish and a moon silver diamond cut design. In addition to Silver Moon, there is also a gray space model that fits completely on your Mac, but is only sold for Apple at this time

Our 2TB review sample measures 10 x 87.8 x 121.6mm and weighs around 74g. The 4TB and 5TB models are twice as thick and generally slightly larger. It also weighs about twice the weight of the 1TB and 2TB models, due to additional storage plates on the internal drive.
