The Last of Us: Part 2 It hasn’t even been released yet, but Naughty Dog is already thinking about the future of the franchise. In an interview with GQ website, Neil Druckmann, the game’s director, revealed that both a new IP and The Last of Us: Part 3 are possible paths to the studio.
“Now that we’re finishing this release cycle, the creative responsibilities are dwindling and my mind can’t help but wonder what the next big step is going to be,” Druckmann mused. “So the next big project could be a new IP, or it could be Part 3 of The Last of Us. In the end, the best idea will win.”
If the franchise does get a numbered third chapter, Druckmann wouldn’t want to shift the focus of the series too much. “It would be a bit cowardly to follow people’s requests about showing how the world was in Europe or Japan, doing something totally different. If we went that way, it would be easier and more convenient to create a new IP.”
Anyway, this shouldn’t happen anytime soon, as Druckmann’s next work will be the adaptation of The Last of Us for the homonymous HBO series, which is about to begin production. Before that, The Last of Us: Part 2 will be released exclusively for PlayStation 4 on June 19th. What are your expectations for the game? Would you like a third chapter? Comment below!
