Qualcomm barely gave up his dream of turning on a laptop in the future, as he just announced the Snapdragon 8cx system-on-chip (SoC) during a press event held in Hawaii. This new SoC is designed specifically for computers, especially laptops and tablets, and is designed for that true many mistakes made by two previous Qualcomm efforts to bring ARM-based computing to the PC.
For those who are more familiar with PC processors, SoC is exactly what it looks like: almost the entire value of the system's computer technology is concentrated on a single chip. That includes not only the computer core but also the graphics core, in this case, LTE modems and special processors for machine learning tasks, the Hexagon 685 digital signal processor (DSP).
This is the great moment of Qualcomm, the third opportunity to really apply the architecture of the ARM processor of the silicon manufacturer to the PC room. And although we still don't know how that will be applied in real-life applications, we haven't finished our review on Samsung Galaxy Books, the first laptop to shake the Snapdragon 8cx chipset: we hope to see a remarkable improvement in the performance and battery life of this SoC, as Qualcomm promised.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx specifications
Processor First of all, the most important thing to know about Snapdragon 8cx SoC is that it contains the 7primer nanometer (nm) processor released for laptops and Windows tablet: octo-core Kryo 495.
In particular, the Kryo 495 CPU comes with a cache that is larger than the previous generation, although Qualcomm has not said how big it is.
However, this should provide an increase in multitasking, according to the company.
A part of the Kryo 495 that Qualcomm uses as a mother is the speed or frequency of the clock, measured in hertz. However, we know that the processor is based, of course, on the large-small computer system of the ARM manufacturer, in which 8cx is built, which contains high and low density cores for various tasks.
However, we know more about what this processor allows in terms of support technology. That includes DDR4 8-channel memory up to 16 GB, NVMe solid state drive (SSD) storage, the fastest standard available on laptops, and UFS 3.0 (hybrid storage format between NVMe SSD and eMMC). Finally, 8cx is finally compatible with Gen 2 USB-C 3.1 and third-generation PCIe connection formats for compatibility with all the latest peripherals and components.
Graphic. On the other hand, Qualcomm has a lot to say about its new and better graphics processor: Adreno 680 GPU. Immediately, we know that this version is twice as powerful as the previous version used for laptops, Snapdragon 850, not to mention 3.5 more times than Snapdragon 835, the first of its kind to be used in laptops.
Qualcomm also proudly states that the Adreno 680 is 60% more energy efficient than the GPU in the Snapdragon 850. That, along with higher CPU efficiency, is expected to encourage longer battery life, but more in a bit more time.
The Adreno 680 also has twice the transistor and twice the memory bandwidth of the previous generation. The Qualcomm GPU also supports the latest DirectX 12 framework from Microsoft to improve rendering.
Finally, this GPU provides several improvements to general images, such as high-efficiency video encoders, support for the latest H.265 video codec used on the web, generation of HDR2 support for real-time color correction and bandwidth to upgrade to two connected 4K HDR monitors.
Connectivity 8cx uses a completely new Qualcomm modem for LTE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity: X24 LTE modem. Through LTE, this modem allows download speeds of up to 2 Gbps (upload of up to 316 Mbps), and Qualcomm promises up to 70% better performance in poor network conditions.
This modem also supports several cellular connection protocols, including GSM, CDMA, EV-DO and LTE FDD and LTE TDD, among others.
Of course, this modem allows the connected standby mode, which is the center of the always connected PC initiative.
Also included in the modem is Wi-Fi 802.11ad support, which includes CA, with MU-MIMO to manage multiple connections and multi-gigabit speeds. Finally Bluetooth 5 and near field communication (NFC) are supported.
Battery duration. Unfortunately, while Qualcomm screams about the enhanced capabilities found in 8cx, it doesn't say much about longevity beyond which it can provide a "battery life of several days." This is more than likely due to the fact that so many battery life rates depend on existing devices.
Because of this, we have assessed that Qualcomm has qualified 8cx for continuous connectivity for 20 hours through LTE. So, while we don't know more specifically, it would be safer to wait for a laptop that can last up to 20 The time this SoC was launched in 2019.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx release date
Unfortunately, Qualcomm has not provided a real release date for Snapdragon 8cx. That said, Samsung Galaxy Book S, the first laptop to shake the Snapdragon 8cx chipset, is scheduled for a post-summer launch. The US version will launch in the fall, while the global version will be released in September
This probably means that Snapdragon 8cx has been sent and will appear on other devices soon. It would be safer to expect Snapdragon 8cx to debut on several laptops and Windows tablets on display at CES this year.

To be honest, Snapdragon 8cx will only be as impressive as the hardware that surrounds it. If we look at the positive side, the device manufacturer has set a low bar to overcome, seen from the first Snapdragon Windows The device. So, here are some laptops that we hope can be seen with 8cx.
Asus NovaGo. This jewel of Asus promises laptops connected to LTE for the price of most other middle class laptops. Although technically transmitted in this regard, the quality of the building is questionable and its performance is poor, to say the least. We are happy to see Asus and Qualcomm return to this drawing board with 8cx on it.
Envy HP. HP Envy x2 comes with Snapdragon 835 as an option, which is ultimately its downfall. Snapdragon 835 cannot offer the necessary performance, although the extraordinary tablet offers luxury. HP and Qualcomm do not need to do much to improve this Snapdragon Windows tablet to the next level.
Lenovo Yoga. Lenovo's new Yoga C930 debuted in late 2018 with Snapdragon 850. Although we haven't been too deep with laptops, of course, the introduction of 8cx will only make this laptop more capable and powerful. Unfortunately, we do not expect to see this successor until the end of 2019.
