Two months ago we had the opportunity to review the BLU Pure XR, a smartphone with which BLU made its official arrival in Chile. However, the American manufacturer brings us a new model that will star in our review today.
Its about Vivo 5R, a high-end mid-range model that stands out for having a 5.5-inch screen, an eight-core processor which is accompanied by 3GB of RAM and up to 32GB of internal memory, being controlled by Android 6.0 Marshmallow, protected by a fingerprint reader and powered by a battery of 3,150 mAh capacity, the same that feeds a rear camera of 13 megapixels and a front MP resolution which both are accompanied by an LED flash.
What else does the BLU have to tell us? Vivo 5R? That we will find out in this review that we do thanks to the kindness of the friends of BLU who provided us with this unit

For this section, BLU's commitment stands out for being a thin, light and quite comfortable team to carry or hold. On the front side you find a black color, while the edges and back side of the equipment are gray.
The Vivo 5R reaches 5.5 inches, size that we see more and more often and several already begin to accept more frequently, although obviously it could bother some, which was not in my case. I also didn't feel any discomfort when carrying it in my pockets.
The materials chosen for this equipment is plastic, although the edges and practically the entire rear part are made of aluminum that apparently looks of good quality. If it lasts or not, that will be seen over time.
Unfortunately I did not like the front touch keys at all for two things, since the first is that they do not have backlight, so if you are in total darkness and do not know the place of the memory keys, you will have problems. And the second is that the touch sensitivity is not entirely good and there are times when you have to press several times to respond to the function you ask.
I will leave you below the design of the Vivo 5R in detail so you know it more thoroughly:
✅ Very good design✅ Good materials✅ Comfortable, lightweight and an almost normal size for many
❎ Front touch keys do not have backlight ❎ Sensitivity of the front touch keys is not the best
13 megapixel main camera and 8 MP front
By this section our protagonist stands out for incorporating a 13 megapixel main sensor which is accompanied by an LED flash and has an f / 2.0 aperture, in addition to having the possibility to record video in Full HD at 30 frames per second.
On the front side we have an 8 megapixel sensor, which also has a front LED flash so that your selfies come out with the best lighting in case the light conditions are low.
When you proceed to activate the main camera for the first time, you will find this interface:
As you will notice you have direct access to the settings, front camera, flash, capture modes, color effects and the button to capture a photograph, in addition to being able to choose the camera mode (Video – Photo – Night – Beautify face).
But if we press on the button to choose the capture modes, we will find the following:
The camera app is quite complete and with many functions that – depending on your tastes – will be useful or not. It also incorporates a Pro mode that is similar to that seen in others smartphones.
In this image gallery you can see each of the available capture modes:
Here you have the configuration menu that will appear in the photo mode and video mode:
Finally I leave you a couple of test photographs that were captured by the BLU Vivo 5R with automatic and factory settings, so you can see the image quality that the equipment will offer you when you buy it.
As for videos, our protagonist is able to record videos in Full HD with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and with up to 30 frames per second, in addition to having stereo audio.
I leave you a test video recorded in the highest quality allowed by the team:
✅ Very complete camera in terms of functions.✅ Good quality in photographs✅ Very good macros✅ Acceptable video quality
❎ Night photographs have a lot of noise
Powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow
In this section we will find the operating system of the team where we have Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the alternative of the Google giant.
As you will notice, the operating system is modified by BLU, removing the applications menu and leaving them on the desktop next to the widgets. It also changes the notification bar, since it is only dedicated to show – notifications – but without shortcuts to computer functions. These accesses are accessed by sliding from the bottom of the screen up.
The equipment comes with some applications of Amazon, it integrates Opera as a browser although it also has Chrome within the usual Google Apps. The good thing is that the performance of the equipment is stable and mostly it is fast, but sometimes it has some lag or it takes a while to open the applications.
The system also accepts graphic themes to customize the equipment, but it also incorporates an app called “Chameleon” which will allow you to use the camera to choose two real-life colors and use them as a theme.
I will leave you with a video where you can appreciate how the BLU interface is Vivo 5R. Remember to select in the player YouTube the 720p60 HD option for you to appreciate the true fluidity.
✅ Good performance in general✅ Customization layer applied by BLU is easy to use and simple✅ “Chameleon” function is notable for customizing the interface✅ Fingerprint reader responds well
❎ Android security patch is not up to date operativo Operating system still remains in Android 6.0 instead of 6.0.1
Multimedia and Audio
In this area the BLU Vivo 5R is known to defend very well, since it incorporates a beautiful proprietary music player, as well as a video player and FM Radio.
Starting with the audio player first, I tell you that here we will be facing a fairly complete player in functions, where you can not only listen to your favorite songs, you can also create and manage playlists and even display the synchronized lyrics of your songs.
The same player offers you the possibility of leaving a song like a ringtone, you can even activate a timer for the player to stop at a certain time.
Of course you also have an equalizer to improve audio quality. You can even choose the type of headphones you are using to optimize the audio and activate the DTS effect. If you prefer, you can choose five pre-equalized profiles or access a customizable five-band equalizer. But that's not all, since you have up to five adjustments provided by DTS.
We also have an FM Radio tuner called NextRadio. This application is supposed to offer extra services in the United States, but they don't work on these sides, so we can only use the basic tuner to listen to our local radio stations. We do not have RDS, but we can save stations as a favorite, activate speaker, among other functions.
As for the video player, we can take screenshots, play over other apps, activate the DTS audio effect, among other functions. It is capable of playing videos in Full HD with up to 60 frames per second.
Starting with the audio obtained with wired headphones, I tell you that it is quite good with well-known bass and treble, although the power of the volume is somewhat limited but still sounds strong.
The headphones that come with the equipment surprised me because they sound super good, are the In-ear type and have a hands-free.
I also tried a stereo Bluetooth headset which sounded super good and with unlimited volume power, so on that side everything is fine, but unfortunately the device is not compatible with the Apt-X codec.
This time we only found a single speaker and it is located in the back of the equipment. The sound quality it delivers is normal, it is not the best nor the worst, it is a flat sound although it sounds quite loud.
✅ Good sound quality ✅ Equalizer and very complete effects bien Very complete audio and video players iene Comes with good headphones
❎ Bluetooth connection does not support Apt-X codec ❎ Volume power is a bit limited
5.5-inch IPS LCD screen
In this section of the review we will find a 5.5-inch IPS LCD type screen which has a Full HD resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and a density that reaches 401 pixels per inch.
This panel offers a very acceptable image quality in the first instance, even a good definition can be appreciated. It also offers a high power in the brightness of the screen, making the image quite clear. In addition the colors look vivid and prominent.
As for options available for the screen, we will find the usual, such as adjusting text size, wallpaper, adjusting brightness … etc. You also have the ability to stream what you see to a TV or device compatible with Miracast, Intel Widi or Chromecast.
Finally I will leave you with a photograph so you can see how the screen looks in broad daylight:
✅ Good image quality✅ Vivid colors and an acceptable definition
❎ Does not bring gloves mode❎ Very few adjustments available to calibrate the screen at ease
3,150 mAh Li-Po battery
We tested the battery of this equipment using the smartphone as if it were really mine, with my own applications, accessories and own number. These are the applications and wearables that I used in this test:
- Used applications: Telegram, WhatsApp, Spotify, FacebookMessenger Buffer Twitter, Instagram, NotifikaMe, Gmail, calls, Camera, Tapatalk, Google Fit, Uber, BeatX, Swarm, TuneIn Radio, VLC, Pokémon Go, Android Wear, Sismo Detector, Periscope and YouTube.
- Active connectivity: 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (for stereo headphones and watch) and active GPS
- Used Wearables: LG G Watch R
- Screen brightness: Automatic
Screen time: 6 hours, 16 minutes
Total usage time: 13 hours, 48 minutes.
Time to charge the battery: 2 hour, 12 minutes.
The BLU Vivo 5R is a high-end mid-range smartphone that has great features such as its 5.5-inch IPS LCD screen that I think looks great, as well as the photographs and videos that we could see in this review and that were captured by this team.
It also has a simple and comfortable design, but it has good materials and its internal hardware manages to enhance the operating system very well, being fast and stable, although occasionally you find something lag, but it is nothing serious.
I worry about that if the issue of updates, I do not know if BLU does its job well or not, but it seems that it does not do very well because the security patch dates from the month of July, which means that it has been 4 months since receives an update, leaving its users exposed to vulnerabilities detected in Android.
What I liked was its battery, I find that giving you more than 5 hours of screen with just 3,150 mAh is an achievement and that speaks of very good of the good optimization that the manufacturer has made in this equipment.
In any case, I recommend the equipment, it is quite good, the applications run well and it is compatible with all Chilean networks. And I highlight how complete it comes in terms of accessories. In Availability I will detail what comes in the box.
The BLU Vivo 5R you can already buy it online through BLU Store Chile for $ 199,990 the 32GB Dual SIM version.
In the box you will find: Equipment, charger, USB cable, quick guide, USB OTG cable (On The Go), stereo hands-free headphones, screen protector and a silicone case.
Many thanks to our friends from BLU who again have trusted us and have provided us with this unit to bring you this complete review.
