Review Huawei Mate 20 X 5G – No need to go particularly far over the years to remember the 7-inch tablet with devices that we thought were there, and that still seem to us today, cumbersome and difficult to use. Well, Huawei is trying to rewrite this idea with its new one Huawei Mate 20 X 5G: a "beast" with a 7.2-inch display for 233 grams of weight.

How will our test go? Find out in ours review.

Design & Ergonomics

We can not start from the size, the aspect that is most noticeable for this smartphone (which perhaps we should call Phablet?). It measures 174.6 mm x 85.4 mm x 8.38 mm and has a weight of 233 grams: define this Mate 20 X 5G it is easy to handle, it is pure utopia because using it with one hand is practically impossible, both for its weight but above all for its width. However, it is not a smartphone designed for this use, the large display has been designed to offer a multimedia experience beyond compare even on the move, taking advantage of the new generation 5G networks.

From the design point of view, it incorporates the Mate 2018 line in its entirety: the fingerprint sensor on the back, the 3 cameras slightly protruding, as well as the LED flash and a glass body with a knurled texture that actually proves to make the smartphone is less slippery. On the front very thin edges and a small upper notch that houses the front camera. The frame instead is in aluminum.

Without even saying it, and the price confirms it in a certain sense, it is an impeccably constructed product and is IP53 water and dust certified, ergo only sprayed, not immersed in water.

The main novelty of Huawei Mate 20X 5G but it is not the dimensions but the network module. It is in fact equipped with Balong 5000 and it is in fact the first smartphone to have a modem that supports 5G fully, both in mode stand alone that not standalone. Until now, in fact, all the tested smartphones (such as LG V50 ThinQ) are equipped with the Qualcomm X50 modem which, however, only supports the non-standalone 5G network, which relies in part on 4G for some features. they are palpable implications but in the future it is the most long-lived and until now most complete smartphone (on the 5G theme) on the market.

It also features WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac (wave2), 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE, SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC and HWA Audio, Type-C, USB 3.1 GEN1 * but not a 3.5 mm jack port for headphones. Receipt and top connectivity: in 5G it obviously depends a lot on the coverage but in 4G it didn't give us any kind of problem.

Curious to know how 5G works? You can take a look at our study done in the city of Milan.

The connectivity is however the only big difference compared to a Huawei Mate 20 Pro or a Huawei P30 Pro as at software level we always find the EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9 PIE, a complete customization and that, as we often say, could be a little modern.

At navigation level there is the classic bar with three buttons but it is possible to activate the gestures, however given the size of the smartphone we do not recommend it. Among the impositions it is possible to change the screen resolution from FHD + to HD + or activate an intelligent choice mode, hide or show the notch (the notch) by applying a black background to the sides, activate or deactivate one of the classic 3 energy-saving modes and wanting to activate the dark theme mode of the interface.

A security theme as already mentioned is a lightning fingerprint reader on the back (strangely we did not opt for a biometric sensor below the screen) or 2D face recognition.

There are also features like the password-protected Private Space and the Safe that encrypts photos, videos and music.

The data sheet of Huawei Mate 20 X 5G does not differ much from that of the Mate 20 Pro: the heart is a HiSilicon Kirin 980 which, as mentioned, is flanked by the 5G Balong 5000 modem, as well as the Mali G76 GPU, 8 GB of RAM memory and 256 GB of internal memory expandable through NM card (available on Amazon). Whether on paper or in practice, it has no problem whatsoever from the performance point of view: it is a smartphone that runs well and has no setbacks.

Even the multimedia aspect is taken care of with a full-bodied and quality audio and a 7.2-inch OLED display with FHD + resolution, only on this last feature we expected at least one QHD + panel. Unfortunately the 3.5mm audio port is missing but headphones can be connected via the Type C port (with a special adapter).

The photo module, front and rear, is the same as the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Triple Leica camera with a 40-megapixel sensor (wide-angle lens, f / 1.8 aperture), a 20-megapixel sensor (Ultra-wide-angle lens, f / 2.2 aperture) and a third 8-megapixel sensor (telephoto, f / 2.4 aperture), flanked by supports laser autofocus (phase, contrast) and AIS (Huawei AI Image Stabilization).

The front camera instead has a single 24-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture.

At the end of 2018 this sector was really enviable but today, after more than 8 months from its arrival on the market, it is no longer obviously the best that can be found, for example, by Huawei P30 Pro, to stay at home with Huawei. However, we find ourselves in front of one of the most versatile and quality photographic compartments with the possibility of shooting from an ultra-wide-angle mode up to an optical 3x and a 10x hybrid.

Artificial Intelligence and night mode are often two values added apart when wrong or too saturated colors. Overall the photos are very beautiful with all three cameras, especially during the day and in optimal light conditions. As usual, the only criticism that can be raised is a marked sharpness. Selfie on average but nothing exceptional while the videos are of excellent workmanship, even in terms of stabilization (deactivated, however, in 4K).

Battery & Autonomy

Huawei Mate 20X 5G it is equipped with a 4200 mAh battery and we sincerely expected something more about it, given the size of the product (the same capacity is present on Huawei Mate 20 Pro, for example). In any case, thanks to the software optimization and to the resolution (only FHD +) of the display, it can easily cover the full day of use even activating the search for the 5G network (which helps to drain the battery more).

In the box there is a 40W SuperCharge charger that allows you to recharge your smartphone in almost 2 hours. It also supports 15W Wireless charging.

In conclusion

Huawei Mate 20X 5G is available from the end of July on the Italian market at a price of 1099 euros (you can already order it on Amazon). His biggest advantage is surely to be the first mobile device to have a complete, pure 5G connectivity, however we expected something more from a product so devoted to innovation. Some shortcomings are for example the lack of a display with QHD + resolution, the fingerprint sensor placed on the back and not under the display and a battery where you could dare more.

A smartphone therefore not for everyone, only for those who find in the 5G a real added value or who could not wait to get their hands on a nice 7.2 inch display product, otherwise a Huawei Mate 20 Pro that much better right now, it costs much less.
