We were invited by Philips to test the TV of the series Smart Cinema 21:9 Gold (50PFL8956D/78), a model Full HD 3D LED in 50 inches produced by the company and for sale in Brazil. The big screen in cinema format, the image quality, 3D technology and the connection with the Internet will be the main points that we will comment on in our review. See below:

Design and performance:

Right off the bat, the format (21:9) of this TV makes it stand out from any other large flat-screen model (widescreen, in English). The idea is that the films can be seen in the format in which they were created. It really gives your living room a cinematic look, widening the viewer’s viewing angle.

However, it is not always worth seeing the images “stretched” across the entire screen. For traditional recordings (like most TV channels), we recommend not filling the corners of the screen with the option “zoom” on TV. This way, you prevent the images from getting a bit enlarged.

thanks to technology ambilight, the sides of the TV illuminate the closest walls with colors based on the image you’re viewing. According to the company, this technology reduces the visual effort from 60% to 90%, making you watch programming in a more relaxing way.

As for the design, the TVs from Cinema Series 21:9 Gold impress. Still a step behind the new borderless models (borderless), they are much prettier than traditional dark-edged screens from other brands.

LED and 3D technology:

with technology edge LED backlight, the images gained more intense colors, compared to the LCD model that we analyzed last year.

To watch 3D movies on this TV it is, for lack of a better description: amazing. It can be said that this is the biggest reason to buy it. The images are beautiful and sharp in a way you wouldn’t be able to see in the 3D cinemas. The model comes with 2 3d glasses very comfortable, without the use of batteries.

Internet and connections:

Like most models in its category, this TV connects to the internet through a Network cable or WiFi connection (optional). With this connection, in addition to making use of a series of programs already included in the TV operating system (YouTube, Internet radios, news, weather, etc.), you can search all the content on your computer (or other devices that support DLNA technology), to see videos, music and photos, all through streaming, ie without the need to download.

We make a caveat here: compared to models of Smart TVs from other brands, the Philips was somewhat behind. Your menu for accessing information from the internet or your computer is slow, complicated and uninviting. How about an advance here, huh Philips?

Updates and Codecs:

Updates to this TV can be done through your internet network, directly through the options menu. All very practical and easy to access. File support is also somewhat limited: for photos, it only recognizes JPG. For videos, it is limited to AVI and MKV formats encoded with H264/MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, or WMV9/VC1. For music: WMA, Mp3 and ACC are supported.

Price and availability:

Until the closing of this publication, the Philips Smart Cinema TV 21:9 Gold Series 50″ (50PFL8956D/78) was found on the Submarino website for the price of BRL 5,499.00, that is, within the average of competing models.
