We have before us a real smartphone, with a powerful processor and outstanding features, but all this comes within a body that for many will be small, which reaches 4.6 inches.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 2

It is the perfect size for many, since being a small and properly designed equipment, it is perfect to control it with one hand, in addition to being light weight weighing only 140 grams.

Its dimensions are 129 x 64 x 9.3 mm and it has the IP68 certification to be resistant to dust and water, managing to resist a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes in fresh water.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 3

The back of the equipment and the edges are made of plastic, but it shows that it is a good quality plastic, while the upper and lower edges will find aluminum. The front is made of glass and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 technology.

We reach the most important section of a smartphone: the screen. This time we find an IPS LCD type that reaches 4.6 inches and an HD resolution of 1280 × 720, while its density reaches 319 pixels per inch.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 4

As expected, the screen has Sony's proprietary technologies and that are already a classic, since we will find the Triluminos Display and X-Reality Engine technology that will provide us with better image quality, especially in the colors that will result Be more vivid.

And indeed it is so, since the screen reaches a level of brightness and luminosity quite high, which makes the colors increase their intensity making them look really vivid. This is something that is easily achieved with IPS LCD screens and the good optimization made by Sony which is great.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 5

As for adjustments we will find the possibility of adjusting the brightness level, the font size and the size of the screen display, in addition to a glove mode, configure the level of hue and colors, among other available options.

✅ Very good design that is quite convenient to use and carry ✅ Very good quality screen ✅ Construction materials are apparently of good quality IP IP68 Certification ✅ Various options to adjust the screen

Our protagonist has a 19 megapixel Exmor RS rear sensor which has an f / 2.0 aperture, in addition to having a laser for autofocus, predictive phase detection, LED flash and digital image stabilization, as well as the possibility of Record videos in 4K at 30fps and in slow motion with up to 960 frames per second.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 8

On the front side we will find an 8 megapixel sensor with an f / 2.4 aperture, which has the possibility of recording videos in Full HD, and its lens has a larger angle than normal so that more people can appear in your selfies.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 9

The camera interface is practically the same as we found in the high-end Xperia, where you will find several capture modes, including automatic, manual, video mode … etc. Among the options we can modify the resolution, color settings, activate the HDR mode, grid, among other options.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 10

In the following video I will show you how the camera interface is, how the predictive approach works, how it is to make videos in slow motion at 960fps, and finally how augmented reality effects work.

Then I will leave you with some test photographs that were captured with our Xperia XZ1 Compact with all its factory settings, so that you can see the experience you will have when purchasing the equipment.

**** Image quality could be better with settings set by you ****

The team can also make videos in 4K quality at 30 frames per second, while in Full HD it can do up to 60 frames per second. It is also the first smartphone to make videos in slow motion with up to 960 frames per second.

I will leave you the test videos so you can appreciate their image and audio quality:

Full HD 60fps

4K 30fps

HD 960fps (slow motion)

✔︎ Good image and video quality (including stereo audio) ✔︎ Full camera software✔︎ Predictive focus works very well✔︎ Autofocus was greatly improved✔︎ First smartphone to record slow motion video at 960fps

✖️ It has no optical stabilization✖️ It also does not have the famous and required portrait mode✖️ Videos recorded at 60fps are seen with “pulls” on the player of the device✖️ The image quality of the front camera is lacking a bit more definition

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact comes from the factory with the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system which is the latest version of Google. As expected, the system is customized by Sony's proprietary interface, although the level of customization does not exceed 40% because the manufacturer tries to maintain much of the original system. The Android security patch at the time of reste review was updated as of October 2017.

As the team has the processor – for the moment – faster in the market, it was obvious that we would find excellent performance, so much so that the “lag” or slowness here simply does not exist because everything is super fluid and fast, and that We add the good optimization that Sony usually applies to their devices.

In the following video you can see how its operating system runs, in addition to showing you functions and menus of the equipment so you can know it even more:

All of the above works thanks to a 2700 mAh battery capacity, which is compatible with Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging. So we started to test the battery using the equipment as if it were mine and thus be able to tell you how it behaves.

Let's go with the detail:

Used applications: Twitter, Facebook, Messenger, Google Chrome, Google Now, Google Asistant, Spotify, Music, Gmail, YouTube, Google Fit, Android Wear, Instagram, WhatsApp and Telegram.
Wearables connected: LG G Watch R
Active connectivity: Wi-Fi (5GHz), 4G +, Bluetooth and A-GPS
Brightness of the screen: Automatic

With the use described above, the Xperia XZ1 Compact managed to give me a range of a little more than 24 hours and 7 hours and 37 minutes of screen approximately.

✔︎ Excellent performance✔︎ Very good battery life✔︎ Very well optimized system and autonomy✔︎ Operating system and security patch updated to date✔︎ Sony customization is lightweight and non-invasive✔︎ Fingerprint reader is fast and its location on the side of the equipment is comfortable✔︎ Compatible with all Chilean networks✔︎ Bluetooth 5.0

Our protagonist brings everything you need to meet your multimedia needs, since we have a music player, a video player and stereo speakers.

Starting with the music player, I tell you that here we have one that owns Sony and was previously known as Walkman. Its interface is very acceptable and easy to use, with many options available and compatible with high resolution audio (Hi-Res).

The player supports high resolution audio files, supporting 24-bit / 192kHz quality as long as you use compatible headphones. You can also create and manage playlists, and have repeat and random play options.

In addition we find various audio effects to improve the sound quality, such as DSEE HX that restores high-range sound to improve the quality of your compressed files and brings them closer to high resolution. We also have the classic ClearAudio +, an audio optimizer and a five-band equalizer with up to 9 pre-equalized profiles

As for the video player, Sony offers an owner that will offer various playback options, including the possibility of viewing subtitles and playing video in the background, among other options.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 11

When connecting a wired headset, the sound quality is very good, with noticeable lows and highs, and the good thing is that the volume power is high. While the power of the volume continues to be limited by software, it is now a lower limit and gives you more power, but still a bit far from the level of an iPhone that does not have this limit for an example.

If we use Bluetooth wireless headphones, I tell you that the audio quality is also very good, although this obviously depends on the quality of the headphones. In addition, the Xperia is compatible with the Apt-X codec to be used in compatible headphones and further improve the sound quality.

Our protagonist has two front speakers to deliver a completely stereo sound, as Sony already does in almost all its high-end equipment.

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 12

The sound quality of these speakers is quite good, in fact Android Oreo makes the speakers sound much louder and more powerful, further enhancing the bass sounds. That if when we increase the volume to the maximum, the bass decreases to protect the speakers and prevent saturation.

✔︎ Good audio quality✔︎ Compatible with Hi-Res audio✔︎ Very complete audio and video player✔︎ Bluetooth compatible with Apt-X✔︎ Stereo front speakers

✖️ Speakers deliver a somewhat flat sound compared to the competition✖️ Does not have Hi-Res compatible headphones✖️ Does not incorporate FM Radio

"Small but powerful", this is the Xperia XZ1 Compact if I had to summarize it in a few words, since it is a true and powerful high-end smartphone, but with a size that for many will be perfect.

And it is that its design – which I personally liked – is quite comfortable to use, its 4.6 inches fit perfectly in one hand and you can use it without the need to use your second hand, in addition to being light and compact.

Inside it houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor that at the moment is the most powerful in the android world, it is also accompanied by 4GB of RAM, enough specifications so that its Android 8.0 Oreo operating system runs perfectly and we do not see the famous and hated "lag".

Review Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact 13

Although its screen is small, it has enough resolution to make everything look excellent and with good image quality, especially for colors that look vivid. We will not find HDR on this screen like his older brothers, but the quality offered in pretty good.

In conclusion: if you are one of those who want the most powerful and the latest, but you don't like walking with a team that is too big, then the Xperia XZ1 Compact is the smartphone you were definitely waiting for.
