Since mid-year, Samsung has managed to break into the mid-range of smartphones with the series Galaxy A. Part of the blame for it is models like the Samsung Galaxy A40, a mobile that was launched a little less than half a year ago and that presents a series of interesting features, such as the Dual camera, battery or Super AMOLED display. In the front we find old people known as the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, one of the terminals that has worked best for those of Shenzhen. Both models, yes, start from a very similar price and whose difference does not exceed 20 euros. Are you thinking of buying any of these? The design section, along with the screen, comes as one of the differential points in the case of Samsung Galaxy A40
With a size considerably smaller than that of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, the terminal 1.4 centimeters lower than the Huawei model and 1.6 centimeters narrower. The differences in thickness are practically negligible (0.03 centimeters). Otherwise if we talk about weight, with a difference of no less than 32 grams.
The reason for this is due not only to the reduced thickness of its frames and the incorporation of a drop-shaped notch, but also to the inclusion of polycarbonate as the main material. For its part, the Huawei model incorporates glass and metal, which directly affects the quality of construction.
The latter, in addition, opts for a notch in the form of a peninsula whose main difference lies in the size and incorporation of two camera sensors. As for the rear, both have a fingerprint sensor, and both have a dual camera system.
If Samsung is characterized by something Galaxy A40 is for being one of the few phones, along with the Xiaomi Mi A3, with Super AMOLED screen within the range of 200 euros. As for the size and quality of the panel, it has 5.9 inches and Full HD + resolution.
Regarding the Huawei Mate 20 Lite, the Chinese model has a 6.3-inch IPS LCD screen and the same resolution as the Galaxy A40. The differences, beyond the technical evidence, are found in the representation of color, the vividness of them and the purity of gray and black tones, with a clear superiority in the case of the Samsung model.
In terms of brightness and viewing angles, the Samsung A40 once again shows muscle in front of the Huawei panel. A brightness whose difference starts from the 60 nits (410 nits of Galaxy A40 compared to 350 nits of Mate 20 Lite).
Processor and memory
Talking about a phone presented in the middle of this year compared to a terminal launched at the end of 2018 implies talking about technical differences in what the processing section refers to. Curiously, The palm in this section is taken by the Huawei Mate 20 Lite.
And it is that while the Samsung model opts for an Exynos 7904 processor of the house itself, the Mate 20 Lite has a Huawei Kirin 710 unit. Two processor whose test score difference as Antutu is no less than 30,000 points (139,000 points of the Mate 20 Lite versus 108,000 points of the Galaxy A40). On the contrary, the Galaxy A40 integrates a most advanced graphic, which directly affects the performance in games and applications that demand graphics.
If we move to the section of memories, here the differences are rather small. Both have one only 4 and 64 GB version, although the Huawei model only supports 256 GB expansion through micro SD cards. The Galaxy A40 limits this capacity to 512 GB.
Lastly, the provision of Android 9 Pie as the base system in both terminals. The differences in this aspect come from the hand of the personalization layer: Samsung One UI vs EMUI 9.0.
We arrive at one of the most interesting sections. Unlike the rest of aspects of Galaxy A40 vs Huawei Mate 20 Lite, the differences in cameras shine by their absence.
In technical data, we find two 16 and 5 megapixel cameras in the case of Galaxy A40 and two 20 and 2 megapixel cameras in the case of Mate 20 Lite. The second lens in both cases is limited to the calculation of the depth in photographs in portrait mode, and the focal aperture of the main sensor is f / 1.7 in the case of the Samsung phone and f / 1.8 in the Huawei terminal.
In the absence of testing both terminals in hand, everything points to the Galaxy A40 has a photographic section a priori superior. On the one hand, the main sensor has a wider opening, which directly affects the level of brightness of night photographs. The secondary sensor, despite having a lower opening (f / 2.2 versus f / 2.0 of the Mate 20 Lite), has a higher resolution, an aspect of special relevance when taking pictures in portrait mode, a portrait mode that is usually superior in Samsung phones, at least in medium and low ranges.
And what about the front camera? Turns are reversed in this case. By having an additional sensor, The Huawei Mate 20 Lite allows us to capture photos in superior portrait mode in quality to those of Galaxy A40 To this is added the possibility of adjusting the level of background blur through the EMUI Camera application and the integration of a wide angle lens for selfies group.
As far as technical data is concerned, while the Huawei Mate 20 Lite has two sensors 24 and 2 megapixels and focal aperture f / 2.0the Samsung Galaxy It has a single sensor 25 megapixels and the same focal aperture than the Huawei terminal.
Autonomy and connectivity
The raison d'être of Galaxy A40 compared to the rest of the mobile series Galaxy A is its autonomy, an autonomy that comes under the arm of a battery of no less than 4,500 mAh, well ahead of the 3,750 mAh battery of the Mate 20 Lite and that together with the integration of a Super AMOLED panel smaller than that of the Mate 20, we should throw much higher numbers in terms of hours of use. To this is added the integration of a 25W fast charging system which exceeds that of Mate 20 Lite in 7 W (18 W, specifically).
If we move to the connectivity section, the differences are less flagrant. The only difference, in fact, part of the inclusion of Bluetooth 5.0 in the case of Galaxy A40. The Mate 20 Lite, meanwhile, has Bluetooth 4.2. The rest of the aspects are identical in both cases: dual WiFi, NFC for mobile payments, USB type C 2.0 and so on.
After seeing the main differences between the Huawei Mate 20 Lite vs Samsung Galaxy A40, it is time to draw conscluciomnes, conclusions that depend largely on price. Today it is possible to find both terminals for a price that starts from 189 and 207 respectively in stores such as Amazon. Is it worth paying 18 euros more for the Samsung phone? In our view, yes.
While it is true that the terminal is less capable in terms of processing, the integrated graphics is significantly superior to that of the Mate 20 Lite, which affects the performance of the games directly. But if there is a reason to opt for the latter, it is precisely because of its autonomy, one of the best in its price range with the Motorola Moto G7 Power.
The rest of the sections, such as the appearance of the device or its size, are somewhat more subjective, although usually we find a much more complete mobile if we talk about Galaxy A40.
