Researchers at the City College of New York have developed an aqueous electrolyte battery that is nearly as good as lithium-ion in its physical characteristics, but at the same time its production costs significantly less.

The battery is made of manganese dioxide and water zinc, the chemical reaction between which produces a voltage of 2.45 to 2.8 V. Although the voltage in traditional lithium-ion batteries is more than 3 V, they are toxic and dangerous, and lithium deposits are limited and concentrated exclusively in Asia, because of which their production is quite expensive.

The developed sample of the battery on aqueous electrolytes has an approximate capacity of 308 mAh per gram of solution. Repeated charging leads to the restoration of the electrolyte, which allows the use of this type of battery in all mobile devices.
