True to his appointment, the Japanese manufacturer Sony has taken advantage of the German IFA fair to unveil your new smartphone high-end: the Xperia 5. It is a team with very advanced features – many of them inherited from the Xperia 1, announced during the MWC -, but with dimensions somewhat lower than what is already the standard in this segment.
“We have incorporated into the Xperia 5 what our customers loved about the Xperia 1, but in a smaller design with the latest and award-winning Sony technologies,” said Mitsuya Kishida, president of Sony Mobile Communications, through the official statement issued by the company.

The most differential element of the Xperia 5, as it already was in the Xperia 1, is 6.1-inch screen with Full HD + resolution, 21: 9 format and OLED technology. The manufacturer once again opts for a somewhat higher panel than usual (21: 9 format) that promises, on the one hand, to offer a more immersive film experience – since this is the format used in the cinema – and, on the other hand, a larger area to run two applications on split screen.
The CinemaWide panel too seeks to stand out for fidelity in color representation, and for this it makes use of technologies already present in the BRAVIA TV range and in the Master Monitor high precision monitors, used by the film industry. In addition, the panel is compatible with ITU-R BT.2020 and DCI-P3 color spaces.
Sony returns to bet on the 21: 9 format, something that differentiates them with the naked eye from the rest of smartphones High end
To complement this promising screen, Sony has decided to integrate Dolby Atmos sound technology, which makes the contents reproduced on this phone even more enveloping. Xperia 5 users can enjoy this technology through the speakers built into the device or, conversely, through compatible headphones.
They are also present, how could it be otherwise, the manufacturer's own audio technologies, which enrich the sound through the speakers and allow maximum squeezing of the headphones designed by the company itself – such as the WF-1000XM3 or the WH-1000XM3.
As far as photography is concerned, Sony's proposal is composed of three main sensors located in the rear region. Its characteristics are as follows:
- Standard camera: 12 megapixels of resolution, f / 1.6 and a few pixels of 1.4 microns.
- Wide angle camera: 12 megapixels of resolution and focal equivalent to 16mm (wide angle).
- Telephoto camera: 12 megapixel resolution and 35mm equivalent focal length.
An interesting detail is that The telephoto lens incorporated in this Xperia 5, unlike the usual proposals in the industry, does not equal 50 mm, so it does not make two increases without loss of quality – specifically, it makes 1.35 increases with respect to the standard camera. The explanation behind this decision, for the moment, is a mystery.
The combination of a f / 1.6 aperture lens in the main camera with the pixel size (1.4 microns), the Dual Photo Diode image sensor and the noise reduction technologies based on the RAW file translates , according to Sony, in crisp and attractive images even in low light. The manufacturer also ensures that its renewed focus system – capable of maintaining focus during a burst of up to 10 FPS with AF / AE tracking – Produces sharp images even with moving subjects.
To enrich the experience and assist the user during photo shooting, Sony has integrated in the Xperia 5 an assistant named Photography Advice, which informs the user about events such as the capture of closed eyes or the unintended obstruction of the objective.
All these systems are controlled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, present in multiple high-end equipment announced throughout 2019. This is based on a battery of 3,140 mAh – significantly lower than that of recent proposals such as the Galaxy Note 10 (3,500 mAh) -, the Smart Stamina energy management system and the USB PD fast charging protocol (Power delivery).
Although it will not reach stores until October, those customers interested in buying the Xperia 5 You can book it from next week. In some markets, in addition, the manufacturer will give away WF-1000XM3 headphones (valued at 230 dollars / 250 euros) to all consumers who formalize their reservation.
