Lenovo has the next generation of ThinkPad X1 Carbon8 in its suitcase at CES 2020. Generation differences for 7 limited and does not affect areas such as the current processor or GPU. On the contrary, Lenovo claims to have increased security, connectivity and audio. The market launch is scheduled for early April.
Interestingly, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G8 does not change to Intel Ice Lake, but still with the Comet Lake-U series processor, which has been offered up to six cores when the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G7 is updated. This laptop is not yet available in stores in Germany, so the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G7 with Whiskey Lake-U is still the latest in Germany.
Without Ice Lake, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G8 still uses RAM on LPDDR3 and not LPDDR4 (X), which is offered up to 16 GB. Dell XPS 13 the new one step further with up to 32 GB. In the case of SSDs, Lenovo is up to 2TB more than PCIe x4 but soon with the launch of the new Dell.
PrivacyGuard screen brighter
The first major change affects one of the five screens. 14 inches available. Lenovo now determines up to 500 instead of 400 cd / m² for the FHD version with Touch and PrivacyGuard, which changes the appearance of the screen so that it can only be seen from the front. In addition to the new PrivacyGuard aspect, Lenovo announces improvements in the security chain called ThinkShield, which is not explained in more detail and consists of features such as the TPM module, the fingerprint sensor and PrivacyAlert. PrivacyAlert generates an alarm as soon as the camera detects someone else's eye.
Wifi 6 and LTE is faster
Despite the compact dimensions of 323 × 218 × 14.9 mm (W × D × H), Lenovo has remained faithful to a relatively wide section of connections. You can choose between two Thunderbolts 3, two USB 3.1 Type A, an HDMI 1.4 and 3.5 mm jack. Speaking of audio: two tweeters and two woofers will provide surround sound (limited), including Dolby Atmos certification. With wireless connectivity, there is now Wi-Fi 6 not Wi-Fi 5 and optional LTE modem with Gigabit rating. In addition, this device can be called Athena Project Notebook.
New function key for phone calls
The input device is also the same as the familiar keyboard and trackpoint, but Lenovo has added new shortcuts for calls with the F9 to F11 key. The battery is also equal to 51 Wh and must provide a battery life of up to 18.5 clock, unless a UHD screen is used. The charging process should now be 80 percent faster in an hour.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G8 is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2020 with prices starting at $ 1,999 before taxes. Information on the German market launch is not yet available.
