This year's IFA has brought several successful premieres of smartphones. Here are all the new models you need to know about.
In the mobile industry, MWC takes place in February in Barcelona. The IFA Berlin fair, from which we have just returned, is focused more on new technologies in electronics and household appliances, but this year there were interesting premier smartphones. Here is my subjective list of the most interesting news.
In my opinion, the undisputed number one of this year's IFA. After the premiere of the superior for several months, it finally is and will go on sale in Europe in September.
Samsung Galaxy Fold it's a very big breath of freshness. There was no person who would pass by indifferently, although this does not mean that the folded smartphone collected only positive feedback. The biggest cons are a very high price of 2,000. euro, thick construction, large notch and concavity in the middle of the unfolded screen.
Even with these drawbacks Fold makes a huge impression live, and the whole looks and works much better than you can think from the pictures. This is not surprising, because the specification is transferred directly from Samsung's top smartphones. The first generation of Fold is not ideal, but in 2-3 years it will be Samsung that will have an advantage over competitors who are just beginning to produce folded smartphones.
Sony Xperia 1 was often referred to as "superflag", because in fact everything had "the best" or even more than "the best". The 4K OLED screen looks great, but such a high resolution has a negative impact on the battery.
Sony Xperia 5 is a smartphone that can be considered "Xperia 1 Compact". It still offers the top specification from the flagship model, but not all parameters are pulled to the extreme. The best example is the screen, which has been reduced to a much more convenient 6.1-inch diagonal, and its resolution is reasonable and decent FullHD +. Very interesting premiere, with considerable market potential. Especially if the price drops to a slightly more acceptable level.
Asus ROG Phone II made its debut just before the IFA, but to be one of the stars at Berlin salons. The title of "fastest Android smartphone" speaks for itself. The ROG gaming DNA can be seen in this model at every step, from the aggressive housing design, through the great AMOLED screen (6.59 inches) with a 10-bit color palette, HDR support and 120 Hz refresh, to components.
As Dawid Kosiński wrote:
The heart of the smartphone is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chip with a clock frequency of up to 2.96 GHz, which is part of the Adreno 640 graphic chip. It works with up to 12 GB of RAM type LPDDR4X and 1 TB of internal memory UFS 3.0. The whole is cooled by a cooler equipped with a steam chamber and a fan, thanks to which the smartphone retains its full performance for longer.
As with the two previous smartphones on my list, Asus is an expensive device. You have to pay 5499 PLN for this show.
4. Motorola One Zoom
This time, a medium price offer. Motorola One Zoom is distinguished primarily by the camera, and specifically the value for money. Here, for about 1,800 PLN, we get a camera with as many as four lenses, so we have a full set: standard viewing angle, ultra-wide angle, telezoom and a depth sensor responsible for reliable blur in portraits.
In addition, performance will not disappoint anyone. The large OLED screen has a diagonal of 6.39 inches and FullHD + resolution, and under the glass pane also houses a built-in fingerprint scanner. The whole is ed by the new Snapdragon 675, 4 GB RAM and 128 GB of built-in memory with the possibility of extension with microSD cards. Added to this is a capacious 4000 mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging.
48 megapixels, Zeiss optics and PureDisplay screen are the most important features of Nokia 7.2. All this for PLN 1300-1500. A strong accent on photographic functions lies not only in the hardware layer (triple camera with an ultra-wide angle and depth sensor), but also in software simulating blur effects created together with Zeiss.
Pictures will be viewed on a 6.3-inch PureDisplay screen with FHD + resolution. The heart of the smartphone is Snapdragon 660, supported by 4 GB RAM and 64 GB memory (variant for PLN 1299) or 6 GB RAM and 128 GB of memory (PLN 1499).
Plex is an unexpected premiere from TCL, the giant of the TV market. To date, TCL has sold smartphones under the BlackBerry and Alcatel brands in Europe, while Plex will be the first model sold under its own brand. However, it will not be the last, because the manufacturer announced a strong offensive.
TCL Plex has a 6.53-inch IPS LCD screen, Full HD + resolution and great color reproduction, which the manufacturer has put special emphasis on. For this we have Snapdragon 675, 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal memory expandable with microSD cards. An important element of the specification are also cameras, namely the triple system, in which one matrix has huge pixels optimized for creating good night images. The other two modules are a standard camera with a resolution of 48 megapixels and an ultra-wide angle with a matrix with a resolution of 16 megapixels.
LG G8X ThinQ has as many supporters as opponents. The smartphone is distinguished by the presence of two (and even three!) Screens. All thanks to an additional case, thanks to which we gain twice the working space and a small Always On Display screen visible after the structure is closed.
For this we have the top specification. As Tomek Domański writes:
(…) it was equipped with Snapdragon 855, has 6GB of RAM, is waterproof (IP68 certified), shockproof (MIL-STD-810G military certificate) and in the VCX photo ranking it scored 77 points, which is more than Huawei Mate 20, Huawei P30 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S10.
The price of this device is not yet known.
8. Samsung Galaxy A90 5G
The list closes with tape Samsung Galaxy A90 5G. Samsung boasts that it is the cheapest smartphone on the market with 5G network support. However, it is difficult to talk about an affordable price, because the device costs 750 euros, i.e. about 3300 PLN. The specification is not disappointing, because we have on board a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen (Full HD +), Snapdragon 855, 6 or 8 GB RAM and 128 GB of built-in memory expandable with microSD cards. For this triple camera.
If the specification is so good, why is the smartphone last in the list? The reason is that the 5G surcharge is completely unprofitable for now. In Poland, we will only use the 5G network in individual test regions, and it still does not reach its maximum potential. For now, 5G is art for the sake of art.
