tl; dr: Warcraft 3: Reforged brings the original to the modern. But the criticism was great at first. ComputerBase analyzes its technology and content. A graphical comparison between the original and the revised shows what happened, and the benchmarks show how much it cost.

The visual version is better than the previous one, but it is still a popular game. They can be roughly divided into three classes.

  • The main game is just higher resolution. The optical advantage is quite low.
  • A game that is almost unrecognizable compared to the original. The graphic quality of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition and specifically Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition does not have to be hidden from a new title.
  • And then there is a middle ground. Blizzard did it with Warcraft 3: Reformed.

Warcraft 3: Reforged still relies on the original 2002 engine to keep the original version 100% compatible so that both versions can be played together in multiplayer. Therefore, the chart is not completely reversed, but is extensively revised. And even if the first impression may be misleading – at the latest when you compare the two versions directly, you'll see that Warcraft 3: Reforged graphic is far from perfect, but the game still looks much better than the original.

Blizzard then completely replaced the unit model for Warcraft 3: Reformed. The new one shows much clearer details, but sometimes it looks very different. Also, the floor now consists of more than just pulp, and fire looks like fire and not a few red pixels. Shadow rendering has been revised and is now applied to more objects and all elements, from houses to bridges and trees, and now appears to be much more three-dimensional, whereas previously it used to be two-dimensional constructions.

There are plenty of other changes in Warcraft 3: Reformed, so the graphics, unlike AoE Microsoft: Definitive Edition, don't look like modern games, but they're attractive enough that you don't constantly want a better look when playing. Warcraft 3: Reformed is consistently good on the eyes.


However, the overall appearance did not follow. The new animation unit obviously didn't work. It appears that they are running at a (too) low fixed frame rate (maybe 30 FPS) because they are uneven. This is not a broken leg, but does not match the reverse impression.

If you wish, you can continue using old graphics

If you prefer to play with old optics or for comparison purposes, you can activate it in the graphics menu. If you only have Warcraft 3, Warcraft 3: Reforged has been started since the last patch, but here the old graphic is active and the new one cannot be installed. It should be noted that despite their compatibility, the two versions use different storage. So if you play a campaign with a new chart first, but then want to come back, you have to start from scratch.

Speaking of old graphics: As always from Blizzard, the developers have also changed the original Warcraft 3 engine since launch, but not in the optics itself. So Warcraft 3 technology initially using DirectX 8.1, but eventually converted to DirectX 9 and then converting to DirectX 11. Warcraft 3: Reforged also uses DirectX 11. There is also an OpenGL renderer. One Windows-PC can currently only be used with DirectX 11. Unlike Word of Warcraft, DirectX 12 is not supported.

IU is silent

The chart has taken many steps forward, but unfortunately the user interface has not. For the most part, it still looks like the original, and is therefore quite large and takes up most of the screen area. The UI cannot be rejected either. At the beginning of the campaign there were also several help texts that suffered from the same problem. Sometimes you hardly see the real game.

The technology of the PC version caused no further problems during testing. In the first few hours after activation, there are still errors loading new levels, which Blizzard fixes after a while.

The technical problem is elsewhere: everything Blizzard promised for the first time did not come into play. Therefore, there is no revised scene, the sound remains the same, and the level and story have not been edited. Blizzard officially wants Warcraft 3: Reformed close to the original. The developer initially promised something different.

Warcraft 3: Reforged offers more graphics options than original Warcraft 3, but there is still no initial setup for easy setup. However, the number of graphics options is clear, as are the convenience features available: The title offers nothing more than a freely configurable FPS limiter between 10 and 300 FPS. However, this can be configured separately if the game is running on the focus screen or in the background.

Warcraft 3: Reforged offers post-processing smoothing that can be turned on or off. However, this does not soften the image completely, especially in low resolution like Full HD. Due to the rigid perspective of the camera, this is not so negative. Plus, smoothing is virtually blur-free, so the image stays nice and sharp even at 1,920 × 1,080.

It is interesting to write about how to improve the graphics of Warcraft 3: Reformed, but thanks to the changes integrated in the original version, it can also show differences directly in the form of screenshots and videos. The screenshot shows the correct scene of the game, the main focus is the video in many scenes of the game.

All images and videos are recorded independently of the internal 3,840 × 2,160 version with maximum graphic detail. Warcraft 3: Reforged constantly maintains the optical level displayed in the scene, so the program can be transferred throughout the game.

Neat texture, but don't zoom

Warcraft 3: Reforged offers decent textures that don't require a lot of graphics card memory, either. 4 GB also enough in Ultra HD, even 2 GB enough for Full HD. So there is no high resolution texture, but this does not bother at least until the player enlarges. Then the low detail clears up quickly on the surface. On the other hand, if you play at a distance and the others are very impractical in Warcraft 3, the texture is not visible.
