Waterfall Screen, Oppo's infinite super screen
Oppo has long been one of the manufacturers with the most interest in innovating in the mobile phone market. In his latest proposals we have seen retractable cameras, fingerprint readers under the screen and some other ideas, such as the front camera itself under the panel. All this has helped him to get attention and confirm that they are trying.

Now comes his latest proposal, a prototype that he has seen through his social networks and that integrates what they call Waterfall Screen. A screen with a curvature of its sides of 88 degrees. Thanks to it, and as you can see in the images, the use of the front panel grows significantly.

Having such a screen clearly impacts on the visual experience. By reducing the side frames to a minimum, what is seen on the screen becomes even more important. Imagine how photographs and videos would look without these limits. Then, at the design level, while maintaining the same form factor, it is also evident that he wins by offering something different compared to the rest of the terminals. But there are also negative aspects.
When looking to innovate, beyond the technical challenges that must be faced – and that will be more or less depending on what you want to do – there are two aspects that cannot be lost sight of: practicality and convenience for the user.
We have no doubt that any manufacturer could carry out the most striking and risky designs. What's more, Nokia did it many years ago. But the question was, is and will always be the same: is it good for the user?
In this Oppo proposal, the Waterfall Screen is striking but what happens with details such as possible distortions of the image in areas of curvature, chromatic aberrations, accidental touches or, much worse, the degree of resistance of the device against possible blows or falls.
If we currently see how many devices with curved screens have these problems, and that the vast majority – with their different thicknesses of side frames – are more fragile than years ago, what would happen with such a screen. A priori it does not seem that it could offer greater resistance nor a solution to the previous problems.
Therefore, while Oppo’s commitment is always appreciated and valued, at the level of convenience it generates the same concerns always. We will have to give them the benefit of the doubt, wait to see how they solve these details and what happens when they finally leave the market. Something we do not know yet, because they have not given date. It has been just a demonstration or announcement so that we know one of the things they are working on.
