Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi officially announced on Monday (27) the new version of the personalized interface that will accompany the brand’s cell phones. This is MIUI 12, which is based on Android 10, but it brings a series of visual and functional innovations compared to the previous version.
Overall, the skin features a number of new animations while browsing, as well as health and privacy features. It will be incorporated not only in the manufacturer’s next releases, both in the Mi and Redmi lines, but also in devices already launched. The list of devices that will receive the update has already been released by the company.
According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, the new version is the “dream job” of the company, which completes a decade of life in 2020. In all, according to the executive, there are more than 310 million monthly active users who use their own interface.
simplicity is key
In general, navigation has become more objective, with new animations for opening and closing applications or screen rotation. Everything is also much more visual: the device settings, which show information such as battery consumption and device storage, now have very detailed, colorful and intuitive graphics, as part of the style dubbed “Sensory Visual Design”.
In addition, the company opted for a cleaner and more minimalist interface, with more white spaces that better segment the buttons and information. Xiaomi also guarantees that use is now more fluid and faster. The look of the icons looks more “flattened” and, on the side edges, devices with screens that have curvatures can make use of this panel space.
The new animations also include app previews, new animations when you press an icon, and motion-based gesture navigation already implemented in Android 10. Modes like multitasking and Picture-in-picture (PiP), which creates a “thumbnail” of video players, for example, have been enhanced to ensure productivity features for those who need to work or use multiple apps on the device at the same time.
The new animated wallpapers, called “Live Wallpapers” by the company, generate a nice zoom animation when you unlock the screen, zooming in to display the app grid. Planet animations have been made available to be the default interface background.
new night mode
Another feature announced is Dark Mode 2.0, an improved night mode for those who enjoy changing the color pattern to make your eyes less tired and generate energy savings. In MIUI 12, this mode can automatically adjust the screen brightness, integrate with the automatic settings of more applications and present a more accurate contrast so it doesn’t impair the use or the reading of texts, besides avoiding the generation of reflections based on in ambient light.
As part of this transition, the wallpaper fades throughout the day, so you don’t feel the transition so quickly.
Health and accessibility
MIUI 12 is now more concerned about the health of users from the Mi Health package of services. Therefore, the devices’ gyroscope can now be used to count steps and record physical activities with “96% accuracy compared to Apple Watch”. The health-oriented services also include a sleep quality monitor that does not require another device or settings, just position the device on top of your pillow at bedtime.
Accessibility has been improved thanks to a feature called AI Calling, which transcribes calls in real time and is able to generate automatic responses based on artificial intelligence, it is essential for the use of the device by people with different levels of hearing impairment.
The management of personal and browsing data also received new features. From now on, the system itself will check each installed application and warn you if any of them have suspicious behavior, such as collecting excessive data or asking for permissions that do not match their natural functioning.
The new security identification protocol prevents applications from accessing information considered “vital” from your device.
The MIUI 12 beta starts to be released as of today (27), but not all devices and countries will be enabled in these first tests.
