Young Rock: all about the series debut about Dwayne Johnson (Recap)

young rock, NBC’s new autobiographical sitcom about Dwayne Johnson’s life before fame, debuted yesterday (16). Comedy navigates through the decades to tell the interesting story of The Rock.

The pilot begins in the year 2032, with The Rock playing a version of himself as he is campaigning for his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. In an interview with Randall Park, he says that he had to work hard for everything he achieved in life.

A flashback takes the plot back to his childhood in Hawaii in 1982. Called by Dewey’s family, little Dwayne watches his father in a wrestling ring while cheering for him. Rocky Johnson was a popular professional wrestler and drove a fancy car. However, his family still lived in cheap hotel rooms. The Rock’s father argued that it is important to pretend you have what you want, with confidence, until it becomes reality.

Dwayne Johnson’s Adolescence

Young Dwayne, played by Adrian Groulx, grew up surrounded by famous wrestlers such as Junkyard Dog, Iron Sheik and Andre the Giant.

His father’s lesson continued to rule his life during his teenage years. In 1987, at age 15, he is shown stealing the cool clothes from stores to impress the girls at school.

Teenage Dwayne, played by Bradley Constant, wants to show off for a girl named Karen. To do this, he takes the $103 he has saved and buys a car from a creepy customer at the pizza place where he works. The car is well finished and barely functioning. Also, the radio only plays opera on a single station.

However, The Rock is surprised when he finds a homeless man named Waffle sleeping in his backseat. Waffle offers to buy drinks for a party and when he sees Dwayne putting on his fancy clothes, he tells how he remembers trying to impress unimportant people. He says that what really matters is family and integrity.

His speech inspires Johnson to drop out of the party and pick up his mother at the bus stop. The boy promises his mother that one day he will buy her a red Cadillac. At this point, Waffle dies inside Johnson’s car.

Then, the future Dwayne says that every time he walks past a waffle house, he kisses his fingertips and points to the sky. He says that he still simulates his aspirations, as his father taught him, but that he has now learned to make the simulation work for him.

Dwayne Johnson at College

In 1990, he goes to the University of Miami to join the football team. When he arrives at the weight room, college Dwayne (Uli Latukefu) discovers that his father has already been there to speak highly of him, including telling a lie about showing up with his son in a cereal box. Dwayne can’t keep up the lie, but he manages to win over his new teammates when he breaks the bench press record for a freshman.

From that moment, The Rock learns his version of “simulating what he wants”, being himself, but a level above.

Dwayne promises to tell Randall more stories about his past in future episodes, like when he brought Andre the Giant to career day at school.
